Descendants of James Magner

Generation No. 1

1.  JAMES1 MAGNER was born in Glen of Aherlow, Ireland.  He married MARGARET FRUIN.  She was born in Glen of Aherlow, Ireland.

Notes for JAMES MAGNER:

The James Magner family lived in the Glen of Aherlow, County Tipperary, Ireland.  This Magner family came from the Parish of Castletownroche, Diocese of Cloyne in County Cork.  Castletownroche is in the Poor Law Union of Fermoy and the Barony of Fermoy in the Province of Munster.  The Census of 1766 has records for David, John and William Magner, and a Michael Magner in the Parish of Kildorrery.  The parish church in Castletownroche is the Immaculate Conception and the church in Kildorrey is St. Bartholomew.  They were considered "landed gentry".  The children were well educated, and music and dancing masters came to their home.  Tutors were also obtained for other educational subjects.

Notes for ROBERT JEROME MAGNER:

Brother Jerome was born in County Tipperary about 1835.  He "entered the Franciscan Brothers Monastery at Roundstone on March 21, 1857, received the habit on November 11, 1858 and was professed one year later.  He was transferred to Brooklyn mission in March 1862.  Four years later he was elected Superior General of the Brooklyn Congregation, a post he was destined to occupy at various periods for a total of twenty-seven years.  During other terms he served as Assistant Superior and General Consultor.  For a brief period he was also Master of Novices.  During his career he was associated with St. Patrick's Academy, St. Michael's in Flushing, and of course, St. Francis College.  It was during his administration that St. Francis College was incorporated by the State Legislature in 1868, and the College was empowered to grant degrees in 1884.

"Rev. Brother Jerome Magner was one of the pioneers of the Brooklyn foundation.  He outlived all the early members of the Community, dying December 12, 1912, after 54 well spent years in the Religious life.  He was a big man physically, mentally, and spiritually.  The great outpouring of people at his funeral testified to the esteem and veneration of his fellow citizens both clergy and laity.  One hundred twenty priests were present at the funeral Mass in St. Pauls's church"  Source:  1933 Diamond Anniversary Souvenir Journal page 29.

James Patrick Kiely, a former assistant at St. Sebastian Church, to organize St. Timothy parish.  At the time Father Kiely started his pastorate, there were still truck farms in the area, but they were giving way to subdivisions of brick apartments and single-family houses.

On January 24, 1936, Father Kiely celebrated the 25th anniversary of his ordination.  In 1957, Father Kiely was named a Domestic Prelate with the title Right Reverend Monsignor.  He celebrated the 50th anniversary of his ordination on November 23, 1960.  After serving the people of St. Timothy parish for 41 years, Msgr. Kiely was named pastor emeritus on March 4, 1966.  He died March 4, 1970 at the age of 84.

Notes for ANNA RUTH HENNEBERRY:

Bethany Echo; Friday, October 25, 1918

" Dalton City:  the funeral services of Ruth Ann Henneberry, 8 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Henneberry, whose death was caused from pneumonia following influenza, was conducted Saturday morning at the Sacred Heart Church by Rev. Curran and burial was at St. Isidore."

NOTE:  The Spanish Flu epidemic, known as a pandemic because it grew to worldwide proportions, is believed to have been born in early March 1918 when soldiers at Fort Riley, Kan., burned tons of manure.  "The onset of illness for those battling Spanish influenza was quite sudden,".  In a matter of mere hours, a person could go from strapping good health to being so enfeebled they could not walk. Victims complained of general weakness and severe aches in their muscles, backs, joints, and heads."  PBS Report in 1998.

Major cities provided a killing field for the virus with 1,000 people dying in Boston by the end of September 1918. Philadelphia fared much worse, losing more than 4,500 residents to the Spanish influenza by late October. The death toll rose to nearly 13,000 in that city alone. In San Francisco, which had the added stress of watching the deadly illness as it moved west, the dead from the influenza epidemic numbered more than 3,500 by the end of 1918. "I had a little bird,  Its name was Enza. I opened the window, And in-flu-enza."

Worldwide, the epidemic killed 20 million to 40 million people. In the United States, estimates place the death toll at 500,000 to more than 675,000. As a comparison, fewer than 300,000 Americans lost their lives serving in the armed forces during World War II.
