It is speculated that James Magner and Mary Prise (Price) may be Mildretts parents as Edward and Mildrett had their children christened in St. Pauls of Kent, the same church in which James and Mary were married.  ????

Notes for EDWARD MAGNER:

Edward Magner participated in the Whiskey Rebellion; Westmoreland County.

He was arrested but pardoned by President Washington, July 1795.

The prisoners were marched to Philadelphia for trial.  They began their march across the state November 25, each between two guards.  After a month in the mud and snow the prisoners arrived in Philadelphia.  They were paraded through the town with paper cockades on their heads, they were described as having the appearance of wretchedness. Twenty men from Washington County were tried for high treason but only two were convicted; Vigol and Mitchell.

He was sheriff of Nottingham twp.

                            1782 Pennsylvania Ranger served under Capt. Willam Barr; 8th class; Rendezvous September 23 1782.  Received pay for two days.

Notes for HENRY MAGNER:

Pennsylvania Ranger of the Frontier served under John Walls; second battalion, second class. Rendezvous in March 1782 and June 1782.  September 15 received pay for services.

1786 Tax list: 100 acres, 2 horses, 3 cattle and 8 sheep.

1786 newspaper mentions Magner sawmill on Monongahelia River.

John was trustee at Meeting House on Mingo Creek 1787, Dec. 15.

John moved to Bourbon County, KY.

Notes for WILLIAM MAGNER:

According to Edward's will William was to be able to stay on the land where he was living  "if he behaved himself!" I'd like to know that story.

Moved to Beaver County by 1810, 1820, then to Richland County, OH. William died 1835 in Richland County where his will was probated. He left estate to last four children but the older ones objected and filed suit.  It was settled that each child was to receive one twelfth of the estate.

12.  JOHN5 MAGNER (WILLIAM4, EDWARD3, EDWARD2, JOHN1) was born November 20, 1796 in Washington County, PA, and died December 27, 1874 in Van Wert County, OH.  He married NANCY WOOD, daughter of WOOD and ELIZABETH.  She was born January 17, 1800 in Northumberland County, PA, and died February 07, 1863 in Van Wert County, OH.

 

Notes for JOHN MAGNER:

John is found in Columbiana County, OH. 1820Census, then Richland County, OH 1830 Census.  Then John pioneered Van Wert County in 1839.  The area was known as Bear Swamp.

The farmers worked hard to tile the land to drain it to make good farmland.

Johnny Appleseed sold his seeds to the farmers in the area.       

John Magner final report filed June 6, 1879; Allen County IN.  He was buried

near Monroeville, IN; Sugar Ridge Cemetery.  His farm of 80 acres was in Tully twp. Van Wert County, OH. bought in 1839.

The list of Thomas' children on the 1860 census is very hard to read,

 he has four children by then.  Thomas was in the Civil War.

1870 census lists nine of Thomas' children, James and Oliver being twins.

Thomas was listed as being a farmer, value of real estate 1600, personal estate, 775.

Clarinda's death certificate names her mother as Mary Ball.  Census names her as Jane, I wonder if name isn't Mary Jane.

Notes for DAVID MAGNER:

David was killed in the Civil War at Mission Ridge, TN.

Pension record states he was killed by enemy ball to head.  I can't find a record where he is buried,  probably with the unknown soldiers in TN.

 

Notes for LOUISA BROTHERS:

Louisa was a Civil War widow.  After David was killed, Louisa moved to IN, 1870's, to be with her family and then moved to Janesville twp, Greenwood County KS by 1875 to be near her brother Horace Elliot Brothers. She was a teacher in Kansas to help support her family. In Colorado 1880 census, Louisa was running a boarding house in Pueblo.  John Calvin, her son was a cattle herder. The other renters were herders for the Pueblo Cattle Company. In Louisa's later years she became blind and went to live with her daughter Nancy Alice Magner Klinger in Fremont County, CO.  She is buried in Lower Beaver Creek Cemetery.  Her headstone is handmade of sandstone.

Rhoda Magner, Jane Magner, Abigail Magner, and Barbary Minard vouched for Louisa, as did Clark and Oscar Brothers.  George Brothers and George H. Rose personally appeared in her behalf when she applied for widow’s pension. George Rose was a physician.

CLINE November 12, 1857 in Van Wert County, OH, son of HENRY CLINE and REBECCA PATTON.  He was born 1838, and died March 17, 1869 in Monroeville, IN.

 

Notes for CATHERINE JANE MAGNER:

Catherine's obit, Decatur, IN: Catherine Cline died Sunday evening, June 18, 1916, at the home of her daughter, Mrs Solomon David on 7th street, at the age of 74 years and 4 days of apoplexy.  She was sick five weeks and two days.  She was born in Van Wert County, Ohio, June 14, 1842 and was the youngest of twelve children born to John and Nancy Magner.  She became a member of the Christian Church at Dixon, OH at the age of sixteen years.  She married George W. Cline, November 12, 1857; at the age of fifteen years, to which union were born four daughters and one son.  Her husband and one daughter and son proceeded her in death, she being a widow for forty-six years.  One sister, Mrs. John C. Hunsicker, of Orange City, KS; her three daughters, Mrs. J.A. Blew, of Diaz, Alabama, Mrs. Hillary Hoover, of Monroeville, IN, and Mrs. Solomon David of this city survive her; also fifteen grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren.  a short service was held at the home of her daughter Mrs. David, at 12:45 and at the Christian Church in Monroeville.  She was buried in the Odd Fellows cemetery at Monroeville.

        After George died Catherine lived with her brother Henry Magner, they are listed in the 1880 Monroe County, IN census.

From History of Crawford County, OH:  David Tobin is a member of the old pioneer families of Cranberry township of Crawford county, OH., resides on his valuable farm of 120 acres. The land is all under cultivation with the exception of 15 acres, which is in valuable timber.  He carries on general farming and devotes some attention to raising a good grade of horses and sheep. He is the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Shilling) Tobin.  Mr. Tobin is a staunch Democrat but never accepted any political office except membership on the board of education.  The family attends the Methodist Church.

47.  JOHN CALVIN7 MAGNER (DAVID6, JOHN5, WILLIAM4, EDWARD3, EDWARD2, JOHN1) was born November 22, 1857 in Van Wert County, OH, and died Abt. 1902, Warren, ID.  He married MARY ANN BUTLER BUSH January 21, 1890 in Chaffee County, CO, daughter of THOMAS BUTLER.  She was born November 17, 1850 in IN, and died July 22, 1923 in Colorado Springs, El Paso County, CO.

 

Notes for JOHN CALVIN MAGNER:

John Calvin was a mining engineer in Cripple Creek, CO.  He helped develop

many mines in the area.  In April ca 1902 he went to ID to look for gold. 

He died in the Thunder Mountain Gold Rush Panic, Warren, ID.  He was probably buried

beside the trail as it was winding and waist deep in snow.

 

Notes for MARY ANN BUTLER BUSH:

Mary Ann was married to John Bush before she married John Calvin Magner.  John Calvin and John Bush were mining partners, in Cripple Creek, CO.  After the death of John Calvin, Mary Ann remarried John Bush.  What is the story?

HATTIE KELLEY, August 10, 1910, Colorado Springs, El Paso County, CO.; b. March 14, 1891, Fremont County, CO (Beaver Creek]; d. March 01, 1976, Colorado Springs, El Paso County, CO.

 

Notes for HORACE ELMER MAGNER:

Horace Elmer married young, but became a self-made man.  He was a master

mechanic for the City of Colorado Springs, and also a gunsmith for the Colorado

Springs Police Department.  He had much artistic talent with metal and wood. He carved gun stocks for many residents of the city.  He was noted for his sense of humor. Elmer was a precision welder.  He traveled to many Colorado cities when they had a precision welding project.

 

Notes for HATTIE KELLEY:

After Hattie's mother Lucinda died, she lived with her uncle and aunt.  Jesse

Kelley and Martha Jane Callen Kelley in Beaver Creek, CO. Her father remarried but she stayed with Jesse’s family. She felt that they were her parents, she lived with them until her marriage.

                            Hattie made gooood oatmeal cookies.  Hattie had much influence on my life.

 

48.  HORACE ELLIOT7 MAGNER (DAVID6, JOHN5, WILLIAM4, EDWARD3, EDWARD2, JOHN1) was born September 25, 1860.  He married MOLLIE E. LOVERN November 27, 1884 in Pueblo County, CO.  She was born May 1860 in MO.

Horace was listed in Cripple Creek city directory, 1904, Mining Engineer.  His family is listed in 1900 Colorado Census, Mesa County.

i.BESSIE M.8 MAGNER, b. September 1885. She married Benjamin Keith Curtis Aug. 28, 1915

49.  JOHN MILTON7 DAVIS (MARGARET6 MAGNER, SAMUEL5, WILLIAM4, EDWARD3, EDWARD2, JOHN1) was born 1854 in Kosciusko County, IN.  He married ELLEN JANE RAKER April 10, 1874 in Kosciusko County, IN.  She was born April 20, 1855 in Kosciusko County, IN, and died July 16, 1940 in Kosciusko County, IN.

       

Child of JOHN DAVIS and ELLEN RAKER is:

                   i.       OLIVER PETER8 DAVIS, b. June 20, 1881, Kosciusko County, IN; d. November 20, 1966, Hammond, IN.

 

50.  MARY CATHERINE7 MAGNER (GEORGE HENRY6, ROBERT5, WILLIAM4, EDWARD3, EDWARD2, JOHN1) was born December 16, 1875 in Williams, OH, and died June 14, 1956 in Bryan, OH.  She married JOSEPH SELVESTER MANLEY September 29, 1874 in Williams, OH.  He was born March 31, 1874 in Williams, OH, and died October 27, 1947 in Alvordton, OH.

i.HOBART8 MANLEY, b. August 06, 1896.
