Dear Jim,

Thank you very much for your prompt reply. I am very grateful by this to have started my search and will come back to you within a short time. As for Jørgen he is a cousin of mine (he too has a brother by the name of Ole). We will in the future coordinate our approaches to you and try to come up with more specific questions and hope by this to come closer to our origins. For the time being we are not sure whether or not we have any links to Ireland, but hope to establish this. But we have got a hint, that there may be links to the US, and hope on the first hand to find these. Regards, Finn Magner

You're welcome. I understand - just found two more Magners in the Virginia cemetery - the photos were in a different box. Add to your list:

Peter Magner b. in County Clare 1839 d. 1931

Mary Elizabeth Hogan Magner b. 1910 d. 1920

My husband also thinks there's a third, presently among the missing. We will attempt to find it. When we were there, most of the Magner graves had flowers on them, unlike the others, which made us, think their descendants were still in the area. The cemetery itself, as you probably know is St. Mary's. It was dedicated in 1858 by the Bishop of Richmond. The plaque says that Catholic workers who were employed in building the Fairfax Railroad Pass began work in 1856. Shortly after the dedication, northern Virginia was "ravaged" by the Civil War and the church was requisitioned as a shelter for the wounded directed by Clara Barton. Funeral services for Gen. Philip Kearney were held in the churchyard. It's a very pretty church and has been beautifully restored. Mary Jane

I know that James McMillen who married Prudence Magner in Western PA in 1779 is my g-g-g-g-grandfather. I do not know where he was before arriving in Western PA. Can anyone help me with this problem? He is listed in Generation No. 3 of the Descendants of Edward 2 Magner. Thank you, Mary Sue McMillin Burley

Kia ora (N.Z.-greetings) from third generation new Zealand born Magner also of Maori descent. I am the fourth son of Bryce Donald Vincent Magner, only son of Vincent Anthony Magner whose father John Magner came to New Zealand in 1874 on the ship Zealandia. According to our Great Uncle Wilfred Magner in his book "A Thousand years of wisdom in a hundred years of history". Out of curiosity do you have any information about our family back in County Cork that will confirm this?

Sarah (Sally) Magner Collins is the d/o John Magner and Mary unknown of Bourbon Co., KY.

OBITUARY OF SARAH MAGNER COLLINS

"Weekly Albia Union" newspaper, Albia, IA, 21 Aug 1884 transcribed from microfilm of the IA Historical Society

Died Aug. 12, 1884, at her residence, two miles south of Albia, Monroe Co., Mrs. Sarah Collins, relict of Mr. Joseph Collins, aged 85 years 11 months and 12? days. Rev. S. Ollerenshaw conducted the funeral service, a large number of friends and acquaintances being present at the same.

Mrs. Collins was born in Bourbon Co., Ky., Sept. 1, 1798, was married to Mr. Collins about Jan. 1827, removing with him from Kentucky to Monroe Co., Iowa, in the spring of 1856. The issue of the marriage was four sons and two daughters, one daughter, the eldest born of the family, and one son, the youngest, being deceased. Left to mourn a beloved mother taken are three sons, and one daughter, but not to mourn as those that have no hope.

In the early years of her life, Mrs. Collins gave her heart to Christ, uniting with the Presbyterian Church in Ky. when aged 17 years. As a follower of her beloved Lord, she was eminently consistent; ever earnestly striving, yet unostentatiously to serve him. God's word she loved to read and hear, prayer she delighted in, and in God's house it was her joy to appear. Full of years and with blessings resting on her head, she was passed away from these earthly scenes to the blessed house which Christ has prepared for the redeemed, leaving to her children that which is worth more than earthly treasure, the heritage of a good name.
